The Schengen Visa
Germany is a proud member of the Schengen Area, a collective of 27 European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border controls at their mutual borders.
Do you need a Visa?
Depending on your nationality, you may or may not need a visa to enter Germany for short tourism stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period).
- Visa-Exempt Countries: Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, the UK, and several other nations can currently enter Germany visa-free for tourism and short business trips.
- Schengen Visa Required: Citizens of many other countries must apply for a standard Schengen Visa prior to arrival.
ETIAS Authorization
Starting soon, visa-exempt non-EU nationals will be required to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) travel authorization online before traveling to the Schengen Area. Ensure you check official requirements closer to your travel dates.
How to Apply
If you require a Schengen Visa, you must apply at the German embassy or official consulate in your home country. Standard documentation includes:
- A completed and signed visa application form.
- A valid passport (with at least two blank pages, valid for 3 months beyond your departure date).
- Travel health insurance covering at least €30,000 for medical emergencies.
- Proof of accommodation and verified flight itineraries.
- Proof of financial means to comfortably support your stay.
